Climate Action & Sustainability

Buíon Phort Láirge supports local communities and people living in Waterford City & County to take action in response to climate change, climate justice and sustainability. We provide information and services that aim to save household costs, reduce waste and promote the circular economy.

Repair Café Waterford:

A Repair Café is a free, community-led initiative where people come together to repair broken or damaged items instead of throwing them away. Skilled volunteers help fix everyday household goods such as small household items, clothing, bicycles, toys, and diagnose digital or software issues, while sharing practical repair skills with visitors.

We delivered a pilot Repair Cafe programme in the Manor St.John Community Centre in collaboration with the Larchville & Lisduggan Residents Association during 2025/6 and are building towards the sustainability of this initiative which was funded by SSE Airtricity. This pilot also involved a RepairFest event held in SETU Arena in 2026 which celebrated repair skills and focused on the learning and sharing of these essential skills.

We also work with other community organisations and with Waterford Library Services to deliver pop up Repair Cafes at different venues across the City and County.

Community Energy:

Sustainable Energy Communities Programme (SEC)

The SEC Programme is funded by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) with support regionally from The South East Energy Agency. Through this we offer support to the 30 Sustainable Energy Communities on the SEAI network

Our SEC Mentor works collaboratively with these groups to share information, assist with Energy Master Plans, and guide them through energy projects, strengthening knowledge of practical steps, available grants etc.

By developing Energy Master Plans, local communities are provided with opportunities to strengthen their learning and develop actions that are relative and practical within their locality.

New groups are also welcomed to join the network which is open to residents' association, community groups, sports club, Tidy Towns or any group of individuals interested in community energy.

Supports include:

  • Presentations to the groups
  • Workshops on availing of SEAI Grants
  • Drop-in clinics
  • Networking Opportunities

For more information get in touch with our Sustainable Energy Communities Mentor, Cleo Murphy.

SICAP Community Energy Supports

Through the SICAP Programme we support individuals, families, and community groups across Waterford City & County to reduce energy costs, improve home energy efficiency, and to access information on practical energy supports and grants.

Supports include:

  • Practical Energy Saving Workshops
  • Follow up drop-in clinics providing individual support with energy bills, switching provider, understanding utility bills and tariffs
  • Warmer Homes Scheme information and application support
  • Tailored energy awareness programmes for groups.

These supports promote greater awareness of energy efficiency, encourage more sustainable energy use, and help communities play an active role in climate action while reducing household energy costs.

If your local community group would like to avail of any of the above support please contact Teresa Phelan.
